Mission and Values

The mission of the Department of Public Health is to foster public health professionals of disease prevention, health promotion, medical care and environmental health. We value charitable, prudent, diligent, and honest as the basic mental and moral qualities and strive to nurture students to improve the qualities for achieving the ultimate goal of “Health for All”. Our education goal is to focus on the five core competencies in public health, including biostatistics and epidemiology, preventive medicine, environmental health, social and health behavioral science, and health policy and management.

 

History

Since our inception in 1973, we have comprehensively developed with three programs – Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degree Programs; and in recent years, we extended our reaching targets to medical students and international students out of Taiwan in the three programs.

 

The Facts and Figures

The Department of the Public Health (PH) has been almost 50 years of history since 1973. The master and doctoral degree programs have been for about 30 and 20 years since 1989 and 2003, respectively. So far there have been about 2350 graduate from the three programs  serving in the public and private sectors in the health related fields.

Our PH department is the second oldest public health program in Taiwan right after the NTU’s PH department. We are proud of our many excellent alumni who ever had or have seats in the head or director positions of the central or local health administrations, providing huge impact on public health policy and management for Taiwan.

 

CAREER Opportunities

Students’ career opportunities are subject to their interests and goals. They can work in the local or central governments in the health related sectors by passing the national examinations and becoming public officials. They also can apply jobs for working in the health-related private sectors such as environmental engineering and consulting, biotech, statistics and consulting companies or non-profit organizations for building up community health. In addition, they can pursue educational and/or academic careers in research institutions or universities.

For students who are interested in being technical personnel in specific working settings, they can pursue passing the advanced technique examinations to be environmental or industrial technicians, fire-fighting technicians, and worker safety technicians, working freelance or in industry.

For graduates of MD-MPH programs, students can develop their careers to be executive managers or directors of public or private hospitals, or pursue their academic achievements in research or educational institutions.

For graduates of international PH master or doctor degree programs, they can be a health planners, educators, and decision makers in the public health sectors in their home countries.
