(what)

I helped the kindergarten students to understand and gain more knowledge in the field of dental hygiene. I also tried to guide the children to understand the correct ways of cleaning their mouth. On my first sight, I saw that the children were only in kindergarten so I tried to grasp their attention by using energetic and outgoing movements. I conversed simply and made contact with the children and understood the ways and techniques on how they brush and take care of their teeth. Then I took record of the condition of their teeth, for example, how many cavities they have. After that, I used teeth models to give the children an idea what the inside of their mouth looks like. Furthermore, I was able to guide the children to do some hands-on practices with the teeth models, such as brushing the teeth. While doing hands-on training with the model, I was able to hear questions from the children concerning about the teeth model and from their own teeth. I was able to use my full knowledge to answer their queries.

過程摘要

All of the members of the team were doing their best to help the kindergarten students to gain more understanding of oral hygiene. The members were able to give positive feed-backs and communicate with the children to raise their interests. On the other hand, the children were also very cooperative and participative in our teaching. They were very involved and used what they’ve learned to answer questions. At first, the children were very shy when we first approached them. Our team members tried to start conversations with them in order to close the gap between them and us, for example, greeting them kindly and asking how their days were. The children gradually became familiar with us, and we were able to break the barrier between them. Also, when we were using the teeth models, they were reluctant to participate, but our team members were very patient and soon we gained their trust.

學習重點

(so what)

Through this experience, I was able to broaden my horizon and to gain more knowledge in the field of dentistry. When I was passing on the knowledge to the children, I was glad that the children were able to understand more about themselves and to have healthy teeth. I thought this event was very meaningful. The major problem I sensed during this experience was that most of the kindergarten children were still unable to correctly clean their mouth and teeth. Therefore, when their mouths were checked, most of the children had cavities. In order to help the children solve the problem, I tried my fullest to send the accurate information of how to take care of their teeth and hopefully they could apply what they’ve learned to their daily life to improve the condition of their oral health. In class, I could only learn from textbooks and teachers, but never had any real life experience. Due to this exposure, I combined what I’ve learned in class with hands-on experience. This is a stepping-stone to my future learning.

省思

(now what)

This meaningful experience made an impact to my life. I see that there are so many people who need help beyond my imagination. I feel that I have the responsibility to assist people in need and pass on the correct knowledge to them to improve their dental health. With this opportunity to serve the community, I had the chance to improve my self, both mentally and physically. In the future, I hope that I can represent the school to volunteer and participate more in these kinds of events and visit different types of community. I would like to pass on my full knowledge to my surrounding individuals and hopefully it can help more people and make a better society.
