Graduate Curriculum

Our department offers an M.S. Graduate program, leading to an M.S. degree in Biotechnology. This program emphasizes lab research training, critical thinking, and formal course work. In order to complete this program, graduates majoring in biotechnology  should finish at least 30 semester-credit units of courses (including six units of M.S. Thesis Research) before graduating. Out of 30 units of courses, 15 units are for required courses; at least 15 units are for elective courses. Required courses will equip them with a good foundation in molecular cell biology & functional genomics, and allow them to develop their ability to think critically & logically and to carry out independent research. Also, our dept. along with others of CMU offers lots of elective courses which should allow them to broaden and/or deepen their knowledge horizon.

While students begin their formal M.S. thesis research during their second year, they will have the opportunity to choose one of our 15 faculty labs and begin their preliminary research and scientific literature reading of a chosen area under the guidance of one specific faculty supervisor during their first year. Our faculty research interests span a broad spectrum of biological science & technology, ranging from cancer biology through Chinese herbal medicine to nanobiotechnology. By the end of their first year, students should have acquired both strong lab skills and sufficient knowledge of a specific research area, necessary for conducting successfully their thesis research. Students will take their preliminary oral exams to determine whether they are qualified for conducting thesis research in terms of suitability of their written research proposals and in terms of breadth and depth of their knowledge & skills. Before graduation, students will defend their thesis research before the thesis exam committee.
